The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has described Nigerians’ reaction the kidnap of the Kankara students as “shameful”.
Hundreds of schoolboys were kidnapped from their school, Government Boys Science Secondary School, in the Kankara local government area of Katsina State by gunmen.
Following the kidnapping, President Muhammadu Buhari came under severe criticism on social media, particularly Twitter, where the hashtag #BringBackOurBoys trended.
At a press conference Friday, the minister said the action belittled the government and particularly the country.
“The reactions in certain quarters to the Kankara incident was shameful. Some Nigerians went as far as denigrating their government and country in the most uncouth and irresponsible manner.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reacted to the release of kidnapped school children who were abducted from their school about a week ago.
In a statement shared with Vanguard on Friday, the UNICEF Nigeria Representative Peter Hawkins said that the incident at Government Boys Science Secondary School, Kankara, Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State shocked the country.
“I am relieved to hear that about 344 children are reported to have been released last night and we look forward to their safe returns to their families. If any are still being held, we call on the attackers to release all children immediately. Any other children still being held captive in Nigeria should also be released. A video showing the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), visiting his cows in Daura Katsina State, barely hours after hundreds of boys were abducted by bandits has elicited criticisms from several social media users.
The pupils of Government Boys Science Secondary School in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State were abducted by gunmen around 11pm on Friday.

The video comes barely a day after Buhari, who is also in Katsina State, failed to visit the school, but sent a delegation from Abuja to visit the school and sympathise with the families of the victims.
