507 people infected; Health Department issues alert The test positivity rate of COVID-19 cases in Kozhikode district surged to 14.29% on Monday and the Health Department has issued an alert indicating the possibility of a spike in new infections here.
According to the District Medical Officer, 507 people were newly tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 on Monday when 3,546 samples were tested. There is a chance of fresh cases going up in the next few days in the wake of people coming out in large numbers in the open and intermingling at beaches, public parks and tourism centres, according to a release from the DMO’s office.

As many as 826 people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the district on Saturday. Nine health workers were infected, and the source of the infection of 167 people was unknown.
Kadungalloor recorded 29 new cases, while Rayamangalam registered 26. Cases of the infection were also reported from areas including Chengamanad, Kothamanagalam, Cheranalloor and Thripunithura.
The district recorded 606 recoveries on Saturday, leaving the active caseload at 8,242. A total of 6,528 samples were sent for testing. As many as 28,744 people remain in quarantine.
Of the people recovering from the infection in the district, 6,064 are at home, 99 patients are at the Government Medical College Hospital and 258 are at first-line treatment centres.

There was a slight increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Kozhikode district on Saturday when 777 people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The district is just behind Ernakulam in the number of new cases.
The test positivity rate (TPR) was 12.44%, and the number of samples tested were 6,241. According to the District Medical Officer, there were 618 recoveries, and the active caseload jumped to 6,069. As many as 758 among the new cases were locally acquired infections, and the source of 11 others was not known.

The Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, has begun an investigation into the outbreak of shigella bacterial infection at Kottamparamba- Mundikkalthazham at Mayanad area in the city.
This follows the recent death of a 11-year-old boy due to the infection and hospitalisation of scores of others after symptoms were found among them. The Health Department claims that six people were confirmed to have the infection and 19 others were suspected cases. Some of them were discharged later.

The active COVID-19 case load in Kozhikode district declined to 5,838 on Thursday when 585 fresh cases and 780 recoveries were reported.
According to the District Medical Officer, there were 545 locally acquired infections and the source of 23 others was not known. Kozhikode Corporation had 123 cases of local transmission, Kunnamangalam 26, Thamarassery 24, and Kakkodi 21. As many as 6,584 samples were tested from the district. Meanwhile, six deaths were reported from the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, on Wednesday and Thursday.
515 cases in Malappuram
Malappuram district recorded 515 new COVID-19 cases and 520 recoveries on Thursday. While 467 of the new cases contracted the virus through local contact, the source of infection could not be traced in 30 cases.
