According to police, the deceased was identified as Ashok Kumar (36) from Namakkal. In June 2020, he was arrested by Ammapet All Women Police Station under the POCSO Act on charges of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. He was then remanded and lodged in the prison. Police said Ashok Kumar was found dead in his cell and the prison authorities sent the body to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Police are investigating.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as D. Saravanan, an autorickshaw driver residing near Ammapet. He was distraught over the Central Government’s proposed vehicle scrappage policy in the Budget which said commercial vehicles over 15 years and personal vehicles over 20 years would be scrapped. Hearing about the policy, Saravanan feared that he would have to scrap his vehicle and due to several loan dues, Saravanan attempted suicide here on February 3 and he left a suicide note in this regard, police said. His family rushed him to a private hospital and was shifted to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital later. Saravanan died without responding to treatment on Friday. Ammapet police have registered a case and are investigating.

The Kottai Main Road is one of the main and busy roads in city and the road is an important link between the Salem District Collectorate junction and Tiruchi Road and other important points in the city. Smart Road works are being carried out on the stretch for over a year now. Kottai Main Road is one of the main roads included under Smart Cities Mission and about 833 metres of the road will be developed into Smart Road. Once completed, the road is expected to have separate lines for storm water drains, ducts for utility cables like electricity and internet, footpaths for pedestrians, cycle track and better motorable road space.
