Human-Monkey Hybrid Embryo Created by Joint China–U S Scientist Team

Human-Monkey Hybrid Embryo Created by Joint China–U.S. Scientist Team On 4/16/21 at 11:28 AM EDT A team of scientists from the U.S., China and elsewhere have developed embryos that are a mix of human and monkey cells for the first time in history. The embryos, which were detailed on Thursday in the scientific journal Cell, were created for scientists to uncover new ways to produce organs for people who need transplants. The researchers injected 25 stem cells from humans, known as induced pluripotent stem cells (or ISP cells), into embryos from macaque monkeys. The scientists then grew the mixed embryos in test tubes for up to 20 days in order to study how the animal and human cells communicate with one another.

By Bill Galluccio Apr 16, 2021 A team of researchers from the United States and China has made a breakthrough that has some ethicists concerned. The scientists successfully created embryos that are a mix of human and monkey cells. They hope the mixed-species embryos, which are known as chimeras, can be used to grow organs for people who need a transplant. These chimeric approaches could be really very useful for advancing biomedical research not just at the very earliest stage of life, but also the latest stage of life,   In the United States, over 110,000 people are currently on the waiting list for a life-saving organ transplant, and a new person is added to the list every ten minutes. More than 8,000 people die every year waiting for an organ.
