The Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN) has opposed the directives given by a Senate Committee to Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to return the seized smuggled rice to the traders in Ibadan.
RIFAN Director-General, Mr Andy Ekwelem, expressed the association’s opposition to the directive at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that officers of the NCS recently invaded Oja Oba Market in Ibadan and carted away truckloads of foreign rice.
A similar operation had earlier happened at Bodija Market, where men of the service also impounded some bags of rice.

Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN) is furious over the Senate’s directive to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to return smuggled foreign rice seized from shops in Ibadan, Oyo State.
On Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions ordered the Customs to allow the owners to take back possession of the rice.
The Senate stressed that the NCS erred by raiding the market. The operatives had seized trucks of hundreds of bags.
Addressing reporters in Abuja on Thursday, RIPAN Director-General, Andy Ekwelem told reporters that the development was a reversal of the gains made in combating smuggling.

There has been scarcity of foreign rice weeks after reopening of borders by the Federal Government, newsmen report.
Newsmen report that many traders in some markets in Abuja on Saturday were out of stock of foreign rice in their shops and warehouses.
Hajiya Rahmatu Mohammed, a rice seller in Utako Market in Abuja, said in view of the scarcity, the price of foreign rice had increased in the market.
Mohammed said that the scarcity started in the last two weeks.
“In January and February, we have the foreign rice available all over the place in this market, that time we were buying N25,00 and selling at N26,000 but in the last two weeks, it has gone up to N27,000 and N28,000, yet we are not seeing it.
