J.O. Combs Unified School District
The J.O. Combs Unified School is among school districts no longer requiring masks after a new executive order by Gov. Doug Ducey. But it s still continuing social distancing, increased sanitation and cohorting.
Requiring masks in school was never what Pima Unified School District wanted to do.
But last year, Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Health Services issued orders requiring masks in school districts and charter schools. The rural district in a Republican community in southeastern Arizona had no other choice but to comply. It was a tremendous burden for Pima Unified students and staff, said Superintendent Sean Rickert.
As vaccination efforts hit a wall of resistance, epidemiologists worry the U.S. will never reach the shelter of âherd immunityâ against a virus that continues to ravage the world â with 2 million deaths and a record number of new infections.
Nationally, the pace of vaccinations has fallen from about 3.3 million daily to about 2.8 million daily. Although the rate of new cases in the U.S. has declined dramatically in the past two months â the spread of new variants could undo much of the hard-won progress.
Counties like Gila have done a great job of getting the population vaccinated up until now â beating both the state and national average.
