Office of the Arizona Governor Doug Ducey issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.
Governor Doug Ducey today toured the vaccine distribution site at the Arizona State Fairgrounds and announced ten Arizona health care frontline workers who will be among the first Arizonans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
After the tour, the Governor also announced the state is distributing $15 million in additional funding to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) for health emergency needs. The funding will be used to help replenish the public health emergency fund.
“The vaccine is here, and we’re getting it to health care workers promptly,” said Governor Ducey. “This is a significant step in the fight against COVID-19 but the fight isn’t over. We continue to urge Arizonans to follow mitigation measures and get the COVID-19 vaccine when possible. I’m grateful to the frontline workers, health care professionals and everyone working hard to get the vaccine distributed

PHOENIX â A record number of Arizonans are now hospitalized for COVID-19 as the state retains its dubious distinction as the place the virus is spreading faster than anywhere else in the United States.
New figures Wednesday from the Arizona Department of Health Services show 3,809 hospital beds are occupied by COVID patients. Even at the previous peak in July, that figure was 3,517.
The new report also shows coronavirus patients are in 1,309 beds in emergency rooms, also a new record.
And while the ICU-bed usage by COVID patients set no new records, just 155 such beds remain available in the entire state.

PHOENIX Dr. Marjorie Bessel, Chief Clinical Officer at Banner Health, says she was one of the first to start administering COVID-19 vaccines at their site Thursday. The moment of optimism is met with the hard realities their healthcare facilities statewide are facing.
In a briefing Friday, she says they ve seen downward trends in COVID-19 hospitalizations, cases and positivity rates in their markets in Colorado and Wyoming, after both states enacted stricter statewide rules to combat COVID-19. She says in Arizona, cases continue to go up.
