Across the United States, thousands of Indigenous women and girls have been reported missing or murdered. On some reservations, this population faces a murder rate 10 times higher than the national average, with 84% of Native American and Alaska Native women approximately 1.5 million women experiencing some form of violence during their lifetime. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, murder is the third leading cause of death among Native women between the ages of 15 and 24.
There hasn’t been enough reported data on the missing women and girls, making it difficult to investigate such cases, says Shaandiin Parrish, Miss Navajo Nation since September 2019. YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Office of the Arizona State Treasurer is currently accepting submissions for the AZ529 Essay Writing Contest till 11:59 p.m. Saturday, May 29.
Hosted by Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee, the contest asks students to answer the dual question, What is your dream job, and how do you plan on achieving it in the future?
All current 5th grade students in Arizona (including public, district/charter, private and home-school) are welcome to participate. 20 vouchers in the amount of $529 each will be awarded towards an AZ529 Education Savings Plan.
Arizona Supreme Court hears case challenging legality of Invest in Ed proposition 208

The Arizona Supreme Court met to hear Karen Fann v. State of Arizona on Tuesday, regarding the constitutionality of Proposition 208, a ballot initiative passed in the 2020 General Election.
Prop. 208 is a ballot measure that increases the highest income tax rate in the state of Arizona by 3.5%, and intends to put the revenue toward state education.
Invest in Education, a key proponent of Prop. 208 campaign, estimated that hundreds of billions of dollars could be raised for K-12 education in Arizona if the initiative passed.
Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee has appointed Keith Alexander, Eastern Arizona Collegeâs special assistant to the president for community and government relations, to the new statewide AZ529 Arizonaâs Education Savings Plan Advisory Committee.
In this role, Alexander will represent Arizonaâs rural community college districts to help increase access to the AZ529 Arizonaâs Education Savings Plan program, especially amongst disadvantaged, minority, and under-represented students.
âEastern Arizona College provides insightful leadership throughout the state at all levels,â said Yee, the administrator for AZ529, Arizonaâs Education Savings Plan and chair of the committee.
âAlexanderâs extensive background in government relations and work in higher education makes him an outstanding choice to speed up the AZ529 Plan forward to families with limited resources for future educational needs,â she added.
