Hunters join cops in the search for Andrea

MARK BASSANT Hunters have been given the all-clear by Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith to assist the police in their continued search for 23-year-old Andrea Bharatt, who was kidnapped last Friday and has not been seen since. Early this morning, hunters from across Trinidad, some with their hunting dogs, met up at the Sangre Grande Police Station and joined police in their search in the same area of Nonpariel Road, Fishing Pond, Sangre Grande. Close to 50 police and army officers spent several hours on Monday at the same location, combing through miles of the forested area in search of any clues that would bring them closer to finding Andrea Bharatt.

Newsday understands they first searched on Monday near North Eastern College, Sangre Grande, then continued in Fishing Pond. Close to 50 officers, including members of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Canine Unit police with sniffer dogs, Eastern Division police and the Defence Force worked their way through the thick forest. Officers had to use the Defence Force s carrier trucks – large trucks which transport their squadrons.

Four alleged kidnappers held

Mark Bassant Four men have been detained by police officers of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad(AKS) for questioning into the kidnapping of 23-year-old Andrea Bharatt. The men ages 20-30 were held just after 11 am today – following information received by police. The operation, which is spearheaded by Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith, led SORT officers under Sgt Mark Hernandez and the AKS to two separate homes in East Trinidad earlier this morning. Senior sources say one man was held at a home in Petit Bourg, while three men were later held at another home in Malabar.

The victim Andrea Bharatt was last seen in a taxi she got into at the Cleaver Road/Arima Old Road taxi stand at King Street, Arima at 5.50 pm on Friday. Anti-Kidnapping Unit officers reported that Bharatt and a co-worker got into a taxi on King Street. The co-worker dropped off at her home in Cleaver Heights and Bharatt was expected to arrive at her home on Arima Old Road, Arima shortly after.
