US Responds Cautiously to Efforts by Iran, Saudi Arabia to End Tensions - New Delhi Times

May 12, 2021 Share The United States has cautiously responded to confirmation that its Middle East rival, Iran, has been holding rare talks with U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on reviving strained relations between the two neighboring regional powers. In a Tuesday statement sent to VOA Persian, a senior Biden administration official said the U.S. has “seen” the reports of the recent talks between Tehran and Riyadh. Without mentioning the two rivals specifically, the official added: “It is the goal of the United States to de-escalate tensions in the region, and we feel that all parties speaking with each other is a positive step in that effort.”

The US delegation included State Department Adviser Derek Chollet; White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Affairs, Brett McGurk; Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joey Hood; and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Affairs, Dana Stroul. Last week, McGurk and Stroul addressed a webinar, hosted by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Representation in Washington. Both officials affirmed that US relations with the Kurdistan Region constitute a “strategic partnership.”

US, Saudi officials hold talks on regional security

The chairs of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 Realization Program Committee – including the Ministers of Health, Tourism, Finance, Economy and Planning met in Riyadh on Saturday. Health minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah said there had been a marked improvement in the health sector since the start of Vision 2030, which later saw the introduction of the Mawid and Sehhaty apps. “In 2015, People used to struggle to book an appointment, but now any citizen can book an appointment via Mawid and Sehhaty applications,” he explained.
