Worcester Foodbank has busiest January since it opened

CITY museums have donated 500 activity packs for children to enjoy this half term, as it is revealed Worcester Foodbank has had its busiest January since opening in 2012. During January the foodbank fed 926 people – that’s up by about a third on the same month last year. That includes feeding 385 children – up by 57 per cent on the same period last year. The activity packs donated by Museums Worcestershire will give children reliant on the foodbank this half term something to look forward to. Museums Worcestershire learning manager Gemma Dhami says: “School holiday times can be demanding for parents and carers both in terms of time and money. By providing these activity packs via the Foodbanks we hope there is something for each child to feel inspired and have fun this half term”

Preparing to unveil our masterpieces

IN 1850, a local Reverend George Downing Bowles donated 26 portraits to Worcester’s museum collection. This group of paintings were the museum’s first coherent group of artworks – like many museums at the time, the popular subject for curators was Natural History rather than fine art – this marked the very beginnings of the City museum’s interest in art and art history. Nowadays, they are arguably the most significant part of Worcester’s fine art collection and are certainly some of the oldest artworks in its care. Lost for decades during the war years, the portraits are a real hidden treasure of our collection whose secrets we are only just uncovering today with the help of some leading experts.
