King of the Cave: New Centipede on Top of Food Chain in Sulphur-Soaked Cavern

The king of the Movile cave in Romania is a diminutive one, at under 2 inches in length. A photo of the newly discovered centipede species Cryptops speleorex, the largest inhabitant of Romania’s Movile cave known to date. (Mihai Baciu, GESS LAB, Mangalia) (CN) Scientists have discovered a new species of centipede able to survive in the most inhabitable of places, deep within a Romanian cave with an unforgiving atmosphere and some of the harshest environmental conditions. In a study published Wednesday in the journal Zookeys, international scientists Varpu Vahtera from the University of Turku in Finland, Pavel Stoev from the National Museum of Natural History in Bulgaria, and Nesrine Akkari from the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, Austria, discuss their discovery of this fascinating creature that appears to be the largest inhabitant of the otherworldly cave.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, which sits about 22 miles outside of Frankfurt, has seen a wealth of fossil discoveries since the early 20th century. Researchers from the University in Sao Paolo in Brazil, Senckenberg Research Institute and State Museum of Natural History in Germany have presented their latest discovery in the journal Biology Letters.

Virginia Master Naturalist Program Graduates Spring Class

The 2020 Spring class of Virginia Master Naturalists (VMN) graduated, finally, in a Zoom ceremony on Dec. 14. The 10 graduates from across northern Virginia are now prepared to conduct and participate in area environmental service projects and programs sponsored by the State-wide organization. An additional nine members of the class will complete their elements in coming months. Noting the “great resilience exhibited by the graduates,” Ron Grimes, Fairfax Chapter Vice President, commented on the numerous disruptions caused by the pandemic which extended the Spring class, intended to end in May, well into the Fall. Graduates completed 12 three-hour classes in earth sciences, four day-long field trips to local parks, offered group presentations, and successfully completed a 100-question final examination to complete the course. Final certification as a Master Naturalist requires 40 service hours and 8 continuing education hours, normally completed within six months of course com
