Friends of Army Aviation return to Orange Beach

By Melanie LeCroy Have you ever wanted to fly in an Army helicopter? Imagine flying high above Orange Beach with the doors open. You will have a chance at this unique experience June 2-3 when The Friends of Army Aviation return to Orange Beach with a UH-1H Iroquois, commonly known as the “Huey.” According to The Museum of Flight, “the “Huey” was a multipurpose utility helicopter famous for its widespread use during the Vietnam War. The aircraft were primarily for troop and cargo transport, medical evacuations and aerial attack. Hueys have also been used in civilian roles such as firefighting, humanitarian aid efforts, research operations and search and rescue duties.”

My family made the trek in 1962 to the Seattle World’s Fair, where the Space Needle had its grand opening, although we weren’t there the first day. Last week, my sister and I made a return visit. Things were different. The Space Needle has been remodeled with floor-to-ceiling glass. Like other attractions in Seattle, the Space Needle and the adjacent Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit are limiting the number of visitors and selling timed-entry tickets due to COVID-19 protocols. Go to the Space Needle website, order your tickets and pick your time. Everyone still has to wear a mask, and the staff encourages social distancing.
