Madeline Maddy English – Everett Independent

Maddy English was born on February 22, 1925 in Everett Massachusetts. Maddy was the daughter of Ambrose Tobias English, a longtime Everett city official who served as Everett’s Acting Mayor from July 1947-January 1948, and Anne English. While there were no organized interscholastic sports while she attended Everett High School, Maddy involved herself in pickup games around the Boston area, eventually joining a Massachusetts softball team in 1939, who played their home games on the concrete floor of the Boston Garden when the Bruins and Celtics teams were out of town. Her stand-out athleticism at third-base caught the eye of a professional baseball scout, who invited her to a tryout at Wrigley Field in Chicago in 1943.

Portrait Honors WWII Aviator and Historic Land Preservation Activist

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Artist James Fiorentino paid tribute to the life, legacy and land preservation efforts of World War II pilot Lt. Col. Vaucher, just days before the decorated aviator passed away at the age of 102 last week. Fiorentino had been able to connect with Vaucher via a Zoom connection to show him the portrait he had painted. Vaucher, a veteran of 117 air missions during the World War II era, passed away a few days later. The painting was presented to Vaucher s family during a virtual meeting of the Bridgewater Township Council on Feb. 11, 2021. The Flemington artist made the presentation along with D&R Greenway Land Trust President & CEO Linda Mead in recognition of Vaucher s efforts to preserve the historic 36-acre Steele s Gap tract.
