3 months ago in Local jsalzone Photo: WHCU ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – A handful of doctors and nurses at Cayuga Health are among the first in Tompkins County to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The inoculations fall in line with Governor Cuomo’s phased approach regarding vaccine distribution and administration. In Phase I, supplies are limited to those that may be most at risk, including frontline, patient-facing healthcare providers. Cayuga Med President and CEO Dr. Marty Stallone says “We are pleased to be able to offer the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine to our frontline workers at this time. And we know this is only the beginning of this fast-evolving process.”

Doctors embrace chance to get vaccine

NEWARK — As the chairman of medicine for Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, Dr. Gregory Heeb is fairly high up on the hospital’s proverbial ladder. So when he was given a chance to be the first Newark-Wayne employee to get a COVID-19 vaccine, he embraced the opportunity. “I’ve been here a long time, and even though I’m chair of the department I do a lot of clinical work in the intensive care unit and COVID area. That’s why I think I was number one,” Heeb said Tuesday, about an hour after getting the Pfizer vaccine. “Part of this job is leadership, and that means leading the way. I was happy to do it.”
