Keep an eye out for zebra mussels

Aquarium owners are being asked to inspect their plants, as zebra mussels are an invasive species that destroys aquatic ecosystems and has found its way into lakes and rivers elsewhere. The province has funded preventive programming to protect waterways, advising boaters and recreational water users to “clean, drain and dry” in order to prevent potential spread of invasive species, which also include plants. The Shuswap Watershed Council said if aquariums containing zebra mussels are dumped or released into the wild, the impacts could be “catastrophic.” The tiny mussels can impact salmon populations, BC Hydro power stations and other facilities due to their ability to rapidly multiply.
