Superstar of STEM’s genetic analysis helps protect koalas
On Australia Day, one of Science & Technology Australia’s Superstars of STEM has unveiled a genetic analysis that could help save Australia’s iconic koalas.
Superstar of STEM and DNA Zoo Australia Director Associate Professor Parwinder Kaur, from the University of Western Australia’s School of Agriculture and Environment, said the analysis could help better understand how to protect the beloved iconic Australian species.
Associate Professor Kaur said genetic analysis would allow researchers for the first time to visualise the koala genome in three dimensions.
“This will help us understand koalas’ co-evolution with native eucalyptus species, how to develop stronger vaccines to prevent common diseases in the species and better ways of supporting their disrupted populations due to deadly bushfires,” Associate Professor Kaur said.

SmP2021 Scholarships applications now open
Science & Technology Australia is offering eight scholarships to the 21st anniversary Science meets Parliament this year, to be held virtual from 2 March to 1 April 2021.
Science meets Parliament brings Australian scientists and technologists together for professional development, networking, and to meet with MPs and Senators. It is a highlight of the annual parliamentary calendar and has enhanced mutual understanding between parliamentarians and scientists as well as fostering enduring partnerships and collaborations.
Two (2) Scholarships are open to STEM practitioners in each of the following categories:
Indigenous STEM Scholarships for people with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage

Nominations open for STA Board General Cluster Representative
Are you a STEM professional passionate about our sector, and keen to make a difference? Then we need you! Science & Technology Australia is seeking nominations for the STA Board General Cluster Representative position.
To nominate, you must be a member of an STA ordinary member (non-affiliate) in the general science & technology cluster.
We seek outstanding candidates to make an active, thoughtful, skilled and principled contribution to STA, and particularly encourage nominations from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, LGBTQI individuals and people living with disability.
