After three and a half years of rapid growth with CEO Hans Brouwer and CFO Steven Tan at the helm, Nikhef spinoff Amsterdam Scientific Instruments will enter its next growth phase with a new captain: Thorbjoern Schoenbeck.
Amsterdam Scientific Instruments (ASI) will have a new skipper. The Nikhef spinoff, which specializes in advanced camera systems for electron microscopes, x-ray and optical photons, has announced that Thorbjoern Schoenbeck will assume the role of CEO, effective immediately. As part of this shift in leadership, his predecessor Hans Brouwer and Steven Tan, who co-managed ASI, will move to take their seats on the company’s executive board. “This is great news for the company, as our departure has always been intended,” explains Tan. “Now as ASI enters into its next phase of growth and its ambitious expansion strategy, this change is exactly what’s needed to elevate the company to the next stage.”
New Total Organic Carbon Analyzer for Ultra-Pure Water Measurement
Shimadzu Scientific Instruments introduces the TOC-1000e online total organic carbon analyzer, which provides high sensitivity and low detection limits, reaching 0.1 μg/L, making it ideal for industries requiring high-purity water, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, food & beverage, chemical packaging and precision equipment manufacturing. The TOC-1000e analyzer is the industry’s first to use a mercury-free excimer lamp in the smallest and lightest casing available. This new Shimadzu technology achieves both high measurement and high environmental performance.
The excimer lamps emit high-energy 172 nm wavelength light by inducing a dielectric barrier discharge within a xenon gas. The instrument also features new Active-Path technology for transferring energy from the lamp to the sample. It efficiently irradiates the sample inside the lamp with ultraviolet light to reliably oxidize organic matter.

Genova/Lecce (Italy), 28th January 2021 - Understanding and treating brain disorders, such as Alzheimer s disease, addiction, chronic pain, depression and schizophrenia, entails the comprehension of the alterations that may occur in the deep regions of the gray matter. Thanks to the European-funded project DEEPER, an international research consortium, coordinated by IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology), will develop new photonic technologies to access those regions and reveal the molecular and cellular dysfunctions underlying the origin of the disorder. The new technological tools are developed with the goal to directly treat the diseases in a minimally invasive and highly effective way. DEEPER will transfer the technological results from laboratory to market, with the ambition to have an impact to strengthen Europe s industrial position in the biophotonics market.
