(BTMI) is continuing COVID-19 sensitisation training exercises with frontline workers in the tourism sector. Manager, Product Development (Innovation & Strategy), Terry Vanterpool-Fox, while speaking during a session at Hilton Barbados this morning, said that the programme last year was a success as many workers in the transport sector were trained and received certification. She said there were more than 1 400 transport providers, including taxi operators and public service vehicle drivers and more than 700 were trained. Vanterpool-Fox said there was evidence that the sessions were meaningful and producing positive results. She pointed out that during a workshop last month the head of the COVID Monitoring Unit Ronald Chapman announced that none of the taxi operators had a record of transfer

However, the claim against Chapman by a former employee, is associated with his role as Managing Director of Argon Pest Control Incorporated, a private company located at Risk Road, Fitts Village, St James. In a letter from the Labour Department dated February 9, 2021 and addressed to the Chairman of the Tribunal, Laurison Mayers, writing on behalf of the Acting Chief Labour Officer, the ERT was informed that on July 24, 2017, Shibbir Greenidge made a complaint to the department via his attorney Khamaal Collymore, that he was unfairly terminated on May 12, 2017.

Little choice for COVID-affected small firms to stay open

January 26, 2021 Firms whose employees test positive for COVID-19 are not being forced to close their doors but some, mostly small businesses, have no choice but to shut down, says the president of the Barbados Private Sector Association, Edward Clarke. His comments come just days after the head of the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit Ronald Chapman made it clear that the unit did not instruct businesses to close once a staff member tested positive for the respiratory virus, saying closure made no financial or scientific sense. But speaking to Barbados TODAY, Clarke said more often than not businesses with a small staff had to temporarily close.
