Body worn cameras will soon be bought by the Alachua County Sheriff

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office will soon be in the modern age with body-worn cameras on the way. ASO isn’t the only law enforcement agency in the county to not have body cams but it is the biggest. Video of arrests and police use of force, including from cameras worn by officers, has been pivotal in high-profile cases nationally, including the conviction this week of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota. An ASO officer shot a man last week after being called to a domestic dispute. He survived, but a woman who witnessed the encounter described it differently from the deputy s account although there is no body-cam video to document the event.

Alachua County reacts to verdict in George Floyd murder trial

Alachua County NAACP President Evelyn Foxx said she never thought she would see a white police officer found guilty of murdering a Black man during the course of his duties. “Justice has finally come to us,” Foxx said. “This was like the day Obama was elected president. It is just good that this is America.” Chanae Jackson, 41, is a lifelong Gainesville resident. She is a mother of four with two grown sons who said she lives in fear they will be mistreated by police.  I m numb but just overwhelmed with emotion but in a very positive way. There s hope, Jackson said. I try to celebrate some of the wins, but it s very difficult to fully enjoy those wins because we never know what s around the corner.

Rioters in the U.S. Capitol who streamed or selfied their invasion should not have been surprised when police came knocking with an arrest warrant. But with the increasing use of technology such as facial recognition and license plate readers along with ubiquitous cameras it no longer takes self documentation to catch suspects. © Photo Illustration by Brad McClenny/The Gainesville Sun
