BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Alabama Department of Human Resources after a toddler died in Jefferson County in 2020.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday by Birmingham attorney Tommy James who represents the family of 2-year-old Demetric Hampton Jr.
DHR returned the child to his father and stepmother shortly after they had been arrested in April 2020 on child endangerment and other charges after a domestic incident where children were present, WBRC-TV reported.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) -A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Alabama Department of Human Resources after a two-year-old died in Jefferson County in 2020.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday by Birmingham attorney Tommy James who represents the victimâs estate. It says two-year-old Demetric Hampton, Jr. was returned by DHR to his father and stepmom shortly after they had been arrested in April 2020 for child endangerment and other charges after a domestic incident where children were present.

Hoover was considered a âhappeningâ city where things were running smoothly, and Jefferson Countyâs government was in disarray, facing bankruptcy and still lacking public trust after 22 county officials had gone to prison for corruption in the preceding years.

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed Thursday in the 2020 death of a 2-year-old Jefferson County boy.
Birmingham attorneys Tommy James of Tommy James Law and Jeremy Knowles of Morris Haynes represent Demetric Jr.’s estate. They filed the lawsuit against the Alabama Department of Human Resources, the director of the Jefferson County Department of Human Resources, Hampton Sr. and yet-to-be identified DHR caseworkers.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies at 12:30 a.m. that Wednesday were called to the 1600 block of Sixth Street N.W. in Center Point on a report of a child not breathing. When they arrived on the scene, the parents told lawmen he had been eating and then began to choke. The boy was taken to Children’s of Alabama where doctors discovered he had multiple injuries. Demetric was pronounced dead at 1:46 a.m.
DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett last Thursday provided insight on the second round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits set to be distributed this year.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources received federal approval to distribute a second round of P-EBT benefits to eligible families following the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services approval of the plan on April 13, 2021.
The P-EBT program allows children to receive benefits equal to the National School Lunch Program reimbursement rate for eligible children. According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources, benefits for children attending schools will be calculated for August 2020f through May 2021.
