New law signed to help growing school systems

Submitted This year, there are 6,474 students enrolled in Alabama schools across 59 different school districts that are not currently included in the Foundation Allocation program that funds Alabama’s schools – and with that funding deficit comes a requirement that local funding pick up those costs. Alabama P-EBT users may see more meal money on cards Updated Apr 15, 2021; The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved Alabama’s plan to send more aid to families with school-age children and SNAP recipients with children under 6 years old. The Pandemic EBT benefits aim to help children who normally would get free or reduced-price lunches before schools closed for the pandemic. While many schools sent lunches home during remote schooling, not all did, and some families also needed help getting nutritious breakfast and snacks, officials said. Eligible pre-K and K-12 students are those who lost access to free or reduced-price meals during the 2020-21 school year because their schools were closed or operating with virtual or hybrid learning models. No application is required. The Alabama State Department of Education is providing the names of eligible children to the Department of Human Resources.

The Fort Payne Board of Education recently approved the purchase of two 2022 Blue Bird Type “D” passenger T3FE 3909 buses with rooftop air conditioners for $123,520.00 each. The action was taken at the March 26 meeting, which was moved up to an earlier time due to a severe weather threat. Superintendent Jim Cunningham announced he would dismiss school early that day and expressed his appreciation to Anthony Clifton, director of the DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency. There ended up being no damage to school property.
