If the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office had followed the U.S. Constitution, the settlement would not have been needed in the first place, said Elizabeth Haddix, managing attorney for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, in a statement.

Sheriff Tommy Wooten called for calm Friday evening ahead of a third night of protests. Gov. Roy Cooper called for body camera footage of the shooting to be released, as did Elizabeth City leaders. “Initial reports of the shooting in Elizabeth City and death of Andrew Brown Jr. this week are tragic and extremely concerning,” Cooper tweeted Friday evening. “The body camera footage should be made public as quickly as possible and the SBI should investigate thoroughly to ensure accountability.”
