Wednesday marks three months since Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced LeRonne Armstrong as the city s new police chief.
Armstrong is an Oakland native who started with the Police Department in 1999 and took over as its chief in February amid a sharp spike in violence in the city, with the homicide rate well above recent years and several hate crime attacks reported on Asian community members.
In addition, the department continues to be subject to federal oversight to oversee reforms mandated in a police misconduct case settlement back in 2003.

After Berkeley Police Department officers arrested a 56-year-old woman on suspicion of committing a hate crime, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged her Tuesday with battery and committing a hate crime.
On April 30 at 3:58 p.m., two women passed by the suspect on the sidewalk near the intersection of Telegraph and Durant avenues. The suspect cursed one of the women and “her Asian descent” and threw water bottles at the women before walking away, according to a BPD Nixle alert.
