California man dies after police pin him to the ground for over five minutes

Print this article A 26-year-old California man died while he was in police custody on April 19. Mario Gonzalez died after officers in Alameda County pinned him to the ground, facedown, for five minutes. Police initially said a physical altercation ensued after a medical emergency, but Gonzalez s family lawyer called that misinformation. The body camera footage, released Tuesday, showed Gonzalez on the ground with multiple officers holding his hands behind his back while putting their weight on him. He appeared to be wheezing while officers told him to “please stop fighting us.” After about five minutes, an officer said to the other two on-scene, “We have no weight on his chest,” and the officer told another to remove his knee from his back as he placed it there.

Mario Gonzalez video shows Alameda officers kneeling on him before death

On April 19 officers arrived at a small park in Alameda – an island city just west of Oakland – after getting a pair of 911 calls. One said the man appeared to be breaking tags off alcohol bottles and the other said he wasn t doing anything wrong but loitering in the area and scaring my wife.   When police found Gonzalez, he appeared dazed and struggled to answer questions about his name and birth date. One of the officers is heard in the video talking to Gonzalez calmly for several minutes but getting mostly incoherent responses. When officers try to put Gonzalez s hands behind his back and handcuff him after he fails to produce identification, he appears to resist. The video shows officers struggling to keep Gonzalez  hands behind his back and having difficulty getting him to the ground. Once he is there, Gonzalez looks like he s trying to get up and trying to get out of the officers control, the video shows.

Man Who Died While Alameda Police Had Him In Prone Position Compared to George Floyd

Man Who Died While Alameda Police Had Him In Prone Position Compared to George Floyd The April 19 death of Oakland resident Mario Arenales Gonzalez while in the custody of Alameda police has garnered national headlines because it occurred just one day before former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd under similar circumstances. The Alameda Police Department released body camera footage of Gonzalez s arrest and death on Tuesday, and family members immediately began calling the police officers account false. The video, seen below, includes audio from 911 calls that led to the incident, and video of an officer trying to communicate with Gonzalez, who appears intoxicated and not especially incoherent. But at no point does Gonzalez become combative or threatening, and officers end up trying to put Gonzalez in handcuffs for reasons that aren t entirely clear.
