SAN ANTONIO – The South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless, or SARAH, released the 2021 Point-In-Time Count results Monday morning.

“The results of the Point-In-Time count always drive our planning efforts over the next year,” said Katie Vela, executive director of SARAH.
City of San Antonio in implementation phase of 5-year strategic plan to fight homelessness
SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio is now in its implementation phase of a five-year strategic plan to take on homelessness issues.
“We didn’t develop this on our own. It was community-driven from day one with community input meetings,” said Morjoriee White, the homeless administrator for the City of San Antonio’s Department of Human Services.
The strategic plan was developed by California-based nonprofit Homebase and presented last year.
White said one of the main recommendations of the plan was enhancing and expanding homeless street outreach. She said the city has been working to bring on a new team within the homeless division.

AUSTIN, Texas (CN) Austin’s storied past dealing with homelessness is headed toward a new chapter.
On Saturday, Austinites will for the first time have a chance to decide whether to again make it a crime for anyone to camp within city limits. Proposition B seeks to reinstate a criminal penalty for persons sleeping in the city outside of designated camping areas and for obstructing public sidewalks by either sitting or lying down. But Mayor Steve Adler, City Council members and homeless service providers are fighting to keep Prop B from becoming law.

Under the Interstate 37 overpass on the north side of downtown, Leslie Hester dug through her tent for a washcloth and bottle of water.
Still huddled in her sleeping bag, she poured frigid water onto the cloth to wipe her face. Outside, the air was thick with smoke from a campfire a friend had built with scrap wood. Tears from the smoke pooled in their eyes.
