Kristie Babcock appointed to Alaska Judicial Council

Credit Gavel Alaska Soldotna’s Kristie Babcock was confirmed to the Alaska Judicial Council today in a tight vote by the Alaska Legislature. Babcock, who runs a State Farm Insurance agency in Kenai, was among a slew of appointees confirmed Tuesday from Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy. She’s married to Tuckerman Babcock, the former chair of the Alaska Republican Party and Dunleavy’s former chief of staff. While many other appointees sailed through, Babcock was nearly rejected. In large measure, my objection really comes back to the constitution, said Anchorage Rep. Matt Claman, one of 26 legislators who voted “no.”. Members of the Alaska Judicial Council nominate candidates for judicial vacancies, who are ultimately chosen by the governor.

Babcock shouldn t be confirmed to Alaska Judicial Council

Babcock shouldn’t be confirmed to Alaska Judicial Council Author: Matt Claman Print article The Alaska Constitution established the Alaska Judicial Council to serve an essential role in building and maintaining fair and impartial courts throughout Alaska. Our Alaska Constitution commands that appointments to the Council by the governor and the bar association “shall be made with due consideration to area representation and without regard to political affiliation.” Sadly, the governor has taken the unprecedented step of nominating a third public member from Southcentral Alaska and failed to appoint a public member “with due consideration to area representation.” If confirmed, Kristie Babcock from the Kenai would join Dave Parker from the Mat-Su and Lynne Gallant from Anchorage as the third public member of the Council from Southcentral. Now, the Legislature must decide whether to follow our constitution and decline to confirm the governor’s unfortunate nomination.

Extension of Applications of Permit to Drill (APDs) Lease suspension Applications for royalty relief Notably, the March Memo specifically states that the above list is not exhaustive. And, to the extent approval is discretionary (i.e., extensions of APDs), we suspect an oil and gas lessee or operator will have difficultly receiving approval for those above-listed actions. Although the March Memo is not addressed to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) serves as a technical advisor to the BIA and is required to approve certain actions that impact Indian tribal and individual trust and restricted lands. The March Memo fails to make this distinction, thus raising the question whether the March Memo also excludes actions taken with respect to Indian tribal and individual trust and restricted lands.
