City Of Bethel Introduces New City Code On Bed And Breakfasts

2:14 Bethel City Council unanimously passed an item that will allow the city to enter into a one year internet contract with a company called Alaska Communications. The company sells low earth orbit satellite internet from multinational communications company OneWeb. The city’s IT director said that it will be at least 10 times faster than Bethel’s current internet plan from GCI for a similar price. No new funding was required for the program since it passed in this fiscal year’s budget earlier this summer. The internet service applies only to City of Bethel offices, and not to other companies or private residences.

Alaska Journal | East Coast firm buys Alaska Communications for $343M

Tue, 07/27/2021 - 7:07pm Alaska Communications, one of the state’s largest internet providers, has been sold to an East Coast telecommunications communications company and an investment firm. The sale was announced at the start of the year, and ATN International Inc. said July 22 in a written statement and filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission that the $343 million arrangement is now complete. Through a holding company, ATN will own 52 percent of Alaska Communications. An investment firm called Freedom 3 Investments IV will own 48 percent through another holding company. “Our brand, company name and commitment to Alaska remain the same,” said Heather Cavanaugh, a spokeswoman for Alaska Communications. She said there are no current plans to change prices.

Bethel City Offices Could Be Using Satellite Internet By The End Of 2021

Bethel City Council is expected to vote on a measure that could bring high speed satellite internet to city offices later this year. The measure would allow the city manager to sign a one-year contract with Alaska Communications. The company serves as the middleman for multinational internet satellite company OneWeb, which offers 10 to 40 times the speed of Bethel’s current internet. The city’s IT manager, Bo Foley, expects the costs to be comprable. He said that the city currently spends about $17,000 per month on internet. Foley said that city employees could start testing the new internet in a demo period later this year.
