KETCHIKAN (KDN) â Alaska Department of Transportation workers on Thursday morning painted over offensive graffiti that had been left on a swath of South Tongass Highway.
The vandalism near mile 4 South Tongass Highway occurred at some point midweek, and followed similar graffiti vandalism that had occured this past weekend at Schoenbar Trail and the Ketchikan Skate Park.
The graffiti at the Schoenbar area locations was cleaned up by Sunday evening by City of Ketchikan and Ketchikan Gateway Borough public works crews.
A Thursday statement from the Alaska State Troopers Public Information Office said that the department is investigating the South Tongass Highway occurence, and has informed the Ketchikan Police Department as they investigate any ties between the two incidents.

Print article Officials on Monday said it could take until the weekend for debris to be cleared from the Hatcher Pass Road area so that the road can reopen after a series of avalanches closed it on Easter. The five avalanches covered about a 2,400-foot stretch of the road with roughly 6 feet of debris.

Capital Transit has added a battery-electric bus to its fleet. This is the first electric bus owned and operated by a public transit agency in Alaska.
“The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is committed to bringing clean public transportation to its ridership and the community,” says Katie Koester, public works and engineering director of CBJ. “Capital Transit drivers and mechanics have been retraining to operate and maintain the new 40-foot long bus and to learn the nuances of its integrated battery management system. We have eliminated oil changes.”
Capital Transit recently unveiled the bus, manufactured in California by Proterra. Juneau Mayor Beth Weldon hosted a dedication ceremony with guests that included Gov. Mike Dunleavy, State Sen. Jesse Kiehl and John MacKinnon, commissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF).
