At a Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce meeting in the early 1970s, Len Laurance said that eventually Ketchikan would host more than one million cruise ship passengers each season.
The proclamation, made at a time when less than 70,000 cruise passengers visited the First City, was met with guffaws by the audience.
But Laurance, who died at 88 on April 8, was right. In both 2018 and 2019, Ketchikan had more than one million cruise visitors and would likely have had more than 1.3 million in 2020 if not for the COVID 19 pandemic that shut down the entire Alaskan cruising industry.
In an interview in 2014, Laurance said his projections were simply based on a 10 percent increase every year.

There are only a handful of Yup ik computer scientists in the world, according to Christopher Egalaaq Liu of Bethel and Lonny Alaskuk Strunk of Quinhagak. The pair have teamed up to create what is likely the most advanced Yugtun translation tool available online.
“There s nothing like, it s the first tool of its kind,” Liu said.
Liu created the first version of yugtun.com, a simple online Yugtun-English dictionary, and presented it at the 2018 Alaska Federation of Natives convention. Liu said that the new version of the website he built with Strunk and another friend can translate complex Yugtun words and even full sentences. Take, for instance, the word “elitnaurvigmi.”
Governor Unveils Alaska Tourism Marketing and Aid Package
Tuesday PM (SitNews) Anchorage, Alaska - Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy recently announced an Alaska tourism aid package, including a robust national marketing plan, as the state’s annual $4.5 billion tourism economy is in jeopardy. The announcement was made in a press conference at the Alaska Native Heritage Center surrounded by cultural tourism businessowners and is part of Governor Dunleavy’s larger proposal designating federal American Recovery Plan Act (ARP) funds.
“Due to the impact of this pandemic resulting in demand destruction and the decisions by the federal government regarding the cruise industry, we need to aggressively market Alaska,” said Governor Dunleavy.

The Republican governor of Alaska, Mike Dunleavy, has a plan to bring back Alaskan tourism. He announced a plan to offer COVID-19 vaccinations at several of the state’s airports. Starting on June 1, travelers flying into Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Ketchikan can receive a vaccination in a clinic outside the security area.
Alaska is dependent on tourism and the state’s economy has taken a hit during the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Dunleavy made the announcement at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. He outlined plans for a national marketing campaign aimed at tourists using federal aid money in the American Rescue Plan Act. He said that offering the vaccine is “probably another good reason to come to the state of Alaska in the summer.” The state has a larger supply than demand. It was the first state to drop restrictions on who could get a COVID-19 vaccine. Last month it opened eligibility to anyone 16 or older who lives or wo
