Minimum teacher compensation bill filed in Texas Legislature

Texas state Rep. James Talarico, D-Round Rock, filed a bill March 11 to establish a minimum teacher compensation amount. House Bill 3580, if approved and signed into law, would establish a minimum teacher salary of $70,000 annually and would account for an inflation adjustment and increase, according to a news release. Talarico, who is a former teacher, said in the release educators have been especially challenged in the previous year and that many teachers have had to work multiple jobs or find additional means of compensation to cover their personal expenses. “In only 12 months, our teachers have endured a global pandemic, an economic collapse, and a deadly winter storm, Talarico said in the release. I’m filing HB 3580 mandating a minimum salary of $70,000 for every teacher in Texas because our educators deserve nothing less.”

Similar to Foxhole, Trey and Ryan said they pride themselves on creating a space that invites people for all occasions from a place to watch sports games or enjoy happy hour with friends to one where you can have date night or celebrate birthdays and major life events. “We really want it to be a place where no matter what the occasion is we have something for you,” Ryan said. In its short time, Republic has established itself with regular customers, some even coming in five nights a week, Trey said. He added one of his favorite parts of the job is building that relationship with his customers, many of whom have become friends.

Austin Public Health has administered 28,717 coronavirus vaccines so far, expects 12,000 more doses next week

However, Dr. Mark Escott, Austin-Travis County interim health authority, said broader distribution of the vaccine could be on the horizon with the approval of a new vaccine manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Johnson & Johnson published the results of its Phase 3 clinical trials Jan. 29, announcing a 72% protection rate in United States trials once 28 days have elapsed since vaccination. Within 50 days, protection rises to 100%, Escott said. “There are lots of benefits to this vaccine in terms of the public health response,” he said. “Primarily, it s a single dose, which makes it a lot easier to get people effectively vaccinated, and it only requires refrigeration, so it makes it easier to get out.”
