Biden administration repurposing Long Beach Convention Center as 12th overflow facility for migrant children

Biden administration repurposing Long Beach Convention Center as 12th overflow facility for migrant children Print this article The Biden administration is expected to open its 12th overflow facility as it struggles to hold the more than 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children in its custody as of Monday, an indication of the severity of the border crisis. The Long Beach Convention Center will become the latest building to be repurposed by the federal government to hold children who show up at the southern border without their parents. It is the second California facility, after the San Diego Convention Center, that was seized by the Department of Health and Human Services to hold children for roughly one month while it searches for legitimate sponsors to release them to within the United States.

Why so many unaccompanied minors are arriving at the southern border—and soon, in Long Beach • Long Beach Post News

- ADVERTISEMENT - So many people have been arriving that the federal government approached San Diego, Dallas and other cities to help provide shelter for migrants packing facilities near the U.S.-Mexico border. Tonight the Long Beach City Council will consider leasing its convention center to the Department of Health and Human Services for up to 120 days to house up to 1,000 children, with the government paying for use of the building, along with food, recreation, education and other services. What led to this situation? While Mexican nationals still make up the largest number of migrants apprehended at the border, Honduras and Guatemala play a significant role in this year’s increase of migrants, including those under the age of 18.
