No, It s Not the Same Old Thing at the Border | Human Rights Watch

No child should be held for hours, much less days, in such conditions. But there’s one important difference from 2019 – an administration that says it is building a system to manage the border in alignment with the values of humanity and dignity.

Seliger sends letter to Texas AG to stop the placement of migrants in Midland County

There are around 700 migrants that have already arrived. Author: Zach Leff Updated: 4:02 AM CDT March 17, 2021 MIDLAND, Texas Senator Kel Seliger has sent a letter to Texas AG, Ken Paxton, asking for an application towards a temporary restraining order.  Seliger wants to stop migrants from coming into Midland County. There are 700 unaccompanied migrants that have already arrived.  “The decision for this placement was made on Friday, March 12th, local officials, however, were never consulted and were not informed until Sunday, March 14th, Seliger said. That evening, the first buses of juveniles started to arrive. I believe the haste and apparent secrecy of this action was designed to avoid soliciting input from local law enforcement, local elected officials, health care services, and educational entities.

Border surge puts Democratic push for immigration reform on shaky ground

Mayorkas s appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee comes as Republicans lean full tilt into a campaign to hold the Biden administration responsible for the growing numbers of migrants. It also comes during immigration week, when House Democrats are set to tee up votes on legislation that would create a pathway to citizenship for young people brought to the U.S. as children, known as Dreamers; some migrant farmworkers; and others who have been living in the U.S. with temporary status.

Putting the U S -Mexico border crisis narrative into context - Mexico

Putting the U.S.-Mexico ‘border crisis’ narrative into context Format It may seem ironic, but even as it carried out the cruelest anti-migration policies in decades, the Trump administration presided over the largest flows of migration at the U.S.-Mexico border since the mid-2000s. This continued through Donald Trump’s last months in office, which saw migration rise sharply even as stringent pandemic measures made the pursuit of asylum impossible. This shows the futility of declaring war on asylum, and the inevitability of large migration flows at a time of overlapping security, economic, political, public health, and climate crises.
