Biden s border strategy faces crucial test amid dramatic surge of migrant children CNN 3/10/2021 By Priscilla Alvarez and Kevin Liptak, CNN © Oliver Contreras/Pool/Getty Images US President Joe Biden listens during a virtual call with the NASA JPL Perseverance team team at the White House on March 4, 2021 in Washington, DC. Aides who traveled to the southern border at the behest of President Joe Biden have described to him a troubling surge of migrant children the administration is now racing to house as the President s more humane approach to immigration faces a critical early test. Biden entered office vowing to reverse what he cast as cruel policies put in place by President Donald Trump that made it difficult for people fleeing poverty and violence to come to the United States. Now, Biden is working to strike a balance between promoting a more humane approach to immigration while still sending the message to would-be migrants not to come.

DHS Expels Families to Mexico & Kids Come Back Alone: La Separación

DHS Expels Families to Mexico & Kids Come Back Alone: La Separación SHARE The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is holding unaccompanied children crossing the border without their parents in law enforcement custody for longer than three days on average with some being held much longer in violation of federal law requiring transfers to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within 72 hours. ORR says it’s running out of space to house them all. In 2019, DHS dealt with a similar rush of unaccompanied alien children (UACs) crossing without their parents, but this time is different. While large in absolute terms in 2019, UACs constituted just one in five Central American children crossing the border. Nearly 80 percent were crossing with their parents. Last month, about 70 percent crossed without either parent.
