Even in a comparatively middle-class coastal neighborhood in economically ravaged Guatemala, Hernandez felt like he had no prospects. Now the maras, local gangs, were breathing down Hernandez’s neck. They wanted to rope him into arms dealing and drug smuggling. He repeatedly refused.

Number of Children Arriving at Border Higher Than Expected: White House
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that the number of unaccompanied minors arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border was higher than the Biden administration had anticipated.
Psaki made the remarks at a briefing at which she was asked to clarify the administration’s position on maintaining a Trump-era refugee cap of 15,000 admissions until May 15, and then raising it to an as yet undetermined level.
“In the announcement we made on Friday, we were clear in the emergency presidential determination that if 15,000 is reached, a subsequent presidential determination would be issued to increase admissions as appropriate. And that is certainly our expectation,” Psaki said.

The blame game is in full swing after a shelter for unaccompanied minors was abruptly closed in Houston on Saturday. The 500 teenage girls living in the emergency intake site (EIS) were hastily bussed away from the facility Saturday after an HHS volunteer died Friday night. The Biden administration is releasing few details.
The lack of transparency from HHS and the White House allows imaginations to run wild. HHS opened the EIS at the beginning of April when the National Association of Christian Churches (NACC) stepped up to help HHS ease the overcrowding of shelters at the southern border. The shelter was only open for a little more than two weeks before it abruptly closed without explanation last weekend. The NACC official in charge said the closing was a surprise to him and he was not notified in advance by HHS. Also factoring into the story is the fact that an HHS volunteer died the night before the teen girls were moved out.
