Desire to help fellow Indigenous students leads to prestigious award for new graduate
UBCO master’s student Sandra Fox is being recognized with the Governor General’s Gold Medal for her research on Indigenous identity which led to several recommendations for Canadian universities to better serve Indigenous students.
UBCO researcher wins Governor General’s Gold Medal
It’s an honour bestowed upon the university’s most accomplished graduate students – and this year, Master of Arts student Sandra Fox is being recognized with the Governor General’s Gold Medal for her exceptional research on Indigenous identity.
The medal, awarded annually, goes to the student with the most outstanding academic record in a thesis-based graduate program.

A university is not buildings; it is the sum of all the activities that go on in and around the campus; and much further. It is ultimately the interaction of learners and those who offer learning opportunities. It is the research and even the conversations between and amongst seemingly disparate parts that lead to surprises, discoveries, solutions, and understandings.
The removal of professors, staff, and the impact of cuts and closing, are beyond evaluation and reach well outside our geographic region. In ecology and environmental sciences, the closing of programs ends decades of awareness, sharing, and success in land, soil, and water research and restoration.

On Jan. 15, NIH director Dr. Francis Collins hosted the 7th virtual town hall on NIH’s coronavirus response. He was joined by NIH principal deputy director Dr. Lawrence Tabak, Office of Research Services Director Colleen McGowan and Clinical Center CEO Dr. James Gilman, to announce further details of the plan to vaccinate NIH staff.

Director Francis Collins, in his “all staff” email, acknowledges that election week brings a level of uncertainty and, during an expanding pandemic, it brings a whole new level of anxiety. He also encourages employees to nurture their health and wellbeing, both mental and physical.
