CDC Says STDs Hit All-Time High for 6th Year in a Row

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that the annual cases of sexually transmitted diseases or STDs have climbed to an all-time high for the sixth year in a row. The report released on Tuesday also found that there were more than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis across the U.S. in 2019, according to a CBS 19 News report. These three were the most commonly reported STDs in the country, as stated in the 2019 STD Surveillance report. The CDC said there was a nearly 30 percent increase in reported STDs between 2015 and 2019, with the sharpest hike in syphilis cases among newborns.

STDs hit all-time high for 6th consecutive year: CDC

They’re as easy to get rid of as they are to acquire, yet they continue to be ubiquitous. We’re talking sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), which are at an all-time high for the sixth consecutive year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said in a new report released Tuesday, day three of National STD Awareness Week.

5 Things Colorado: Rep. Mary Young, Public option, A fourth wave DJ Wilson | Apr 14, 2021 Share this: Thanks very much for reading our stuff, and for supporting our work at State of Reform. This newsletter is free because of the engagement of sponsors and attendees at our annual policy conference. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this year we can convene in person. But, if we can’t, our virtual conference platform has really been refined over this last year. So, save the date for October 28th for this year’s event! That feels like three lifetimes from now. But, we’ll be getting our Convening Panel back together after the session to kick off our planning.

Riskier sex and reductions in prevention and treatment programs could be contributing to the rise in STIs in the U S , experts say

The largest jump, and perhaps most concerning, was the uptick in cases of congenital syphilis   when newborns are infected while in the womb. Those rates in 2019 were nearly four times higher than they were in 2015. Early 2020 data suggests that disruptions to STI testing and treatment services during the COVID-19 pandemic will most likely contribute to these concerning numbers and have a major impact on public health. When left untreated, STIs can lead to other health issues including cancer, experts say. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are often asymptomatic. Chlamydia can cause infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. Gonorrhea can cause infertility in men. Syphilis can lead to heart disease, blindness, mental health issues and infant death.

Final New Frontiers seminar planned

The New Frontiers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series will hold its final WebEx event of the year at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 19. This seminar will focus on what has been learned throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the current state of vaccinations, and where do individuals go from here. Dr. Lucio Miele, Professor and Head of the Department of Genetics at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, will be joined by his colleague Clinical Associate Professor at the LSU schools of Public Health and Medicine and former Louisiana Secretary of Health, Dr. Rebekah Gee. Together, Miele and Gee will share the latest on COVID-19 variants, vaccinations, what comes next, and how everyone plays a role in promoting the health of the community.
