ALASKA now taking vax appointments

Alaska entered its second phase (Phase 1b) of coronavirus vaccine distribution on Wednesday, allowing Alaskans aged 65 years or older to begin making appointments for vaccinations that will become available starting Monday. Individuals in that age bracket are considered to be part of Tier 1 of Phase 1b, and became eligible to schedule appointments at noon on Wednesday. But by about 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, no appointments for COVID-19 vaccination remained available. Tessa Walker Linderman of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services said in a late Wednesday afternoon media briefing that the lack of appointments was not an issue of the DHSS scheduling website being overrun, but the number of people trying to book appointments outnumbered the available vaccine providers at that time.

Governor splits health and social services

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy. Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy proposed two distinct executive branch departments and the legislature has 60 days to overrule his decision. The governor said the reorganization will streamline and improve the delivery of critical programs and services while creating more flexibility and responsiveness in both departments and improving outcomes. The idea is to have better oversight and have these programs do what they are meant to do, he said. Dunleavy said this proposal will benefit Alaska s children, elderly and vulnerable populations. In order to obtain a keen focus on each crucial division and achieve the outcomes of each program that Alaskans expect and deserve, I will exercise my constitutional authority and reorganize the department to meet the needs of Alaskans into the 21st century, he added.
