World view Despite the pandemic, Vice Provost James Keenan, S.J., reports new advancements in global engagement for Boston College Vice Provost for Global Engagement James Keenan, S.J. (Lee Pellegrini) The coronavirus has made it a challenging time for global outreach in academia, given international travel restrictions and financial uncertainties throughout higher education. But the Boston College Office of Global Engagement, under the direction of first-year Vice Provost James Keenan, S.J., has made significant advances nonetheless. Fr. Keenan has succeeded in meeting the ambitious agenda he set for himself by strengthening the Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities, or SACRU, creating new partnerships with Jesuit institutions, and working with the Office of the Provost to bring the Office of International Programs and Office of International Students and Scholars under the auspices of the Office of Global Engagement this semester.

Meet Haoyu Luo, An International Student at Seton Hall - Seton Hall University

Seton Hall University Monday, February 8, 2021 By Angelica DeLeon Haoyu Luo, an Economics and Finance major, has found a home away from home at Seton Hall. Research studies show that international students attending U.S. universities and colleges face many challenges associated with the transition of being a student abroad. The unprecedented events of 2020 – the pandemic, travel restrictions, and changes in visa requirements, among them further complicated what students might expect to encounter as they attend college in America. Nonetheless, many students are managing to thrive in these tumultuous times. Haoyu Luo, an Economics and Finance major originally from China, did just that. Luo is one of the more than 300 international students who call Seton Hall home.

Once students arrive, the “action plan” proposes that conversations around identity continue through an “on-site training series.” Additionally, the process for reporting discrimination will be further emphasized in orientation, and staff on the ground will be given more guidance as it relates to “supporting students of targeted identities.” 

INTO CSU Center to close May 14, 2021

INTO CSU Center to close May 14, 2021 29 Jan, 2021 Following a strategic review, the Board of the CSU-INTO Joint Venture has decided to end the joint venture and close the INTO CSU Center, effective May 14, 2021. CSU and INTO will remain partners under a new international student recruitment agreement, which will sustain their collaboration in new ways that encourage international students to attend Colorado State University. All international students currently enrolled in the INTO program at CSU will be taught and supported as they complete their studies. INTO and CSU both are committed to ensuring these students experience no disruption and continue to receive the highest levels of teaching quality and support.

In a paper published in Evolutionary Bioinformatics, Illinois researchers show COVID-19 cases and mortality rates, among other epidemiological metrics, are significantly correlated with temperature and latitude across 221 countries.
