Column: Gloria pushes changes in SDPD amid national focus on law enforcement

Print Mayor Todd Gloria seemed to be in the zeitgeist of the moment last week when he unveiled potentially sweeping changes in San Diego Police Department practices. Discussions over how law enforcement operates have been taking place across the country since last year’s social justice protests triggered by the death of George Floyd and other Black people at the hands of police. Events in the past few weeks have intensified that debate. The ongoing trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering Floyd, has thrust the incident back to the top of the national news along with the dispute over police tactics and training.

San Diego mayor proposes police reforms, lays out public safety priorities

SAN DIEGO    Mayor Todd Gloria announced a package of public safety reforms Friday that he said are aimed at addressing disparities in policing and increasing transparency and accountability for the San Diego Police Department. Among the 11 reforms and so-called policy priorities are proposals to eliminate existing gang injunctions, explore alternatives to arresting low-level offenders and review the types of non-emergency calls to which officers respond. Other proposals deal with hiring practices and anti-bias training for officers, exploring potential limits on the sometimes controversial practice known as pretext stops and removing the city’s Office of Homeland Security from the control of the Police Department.
