COVID relief deal includes billions for schools to improve ventilation, address learning loss during the pandemic

The $900 billion COVID-19 stimulus deal approved by Congress includes billions for elementary and secondary schools, including dollars to help with improving ventilation and air quality during the pandemic.
A total of $54.3 billion has been secured for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. This will send formula funding to states and school districts so they can respond to the coronavirus crisis.
Those dollars can be used for school facilities repairs and improvements, like heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems projects to improve indoor air quality, as well as addressing learning loss among students, including low-income students, children with disabilities, English learners, racial and ethnic minorities, students experiencing homelessness and children and youth in foster care.

Washington (CNN)State Department acting Inspector General Matthew Klimow is leaving his post earlier than expected after just a few months on the job, he told colleagues in a memo, a source at the Office of the Inspector General told CNN on Thursday.
Klimow announced his departure the same day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo s department offered a combative response to an inspector general report on an investigation into travel by the secretary s wife, Susan.
The independent watchdog found that the majority of trips by Susan Pompeo over a two-year period had taken place without written approval from the State Department, despite the fact that her trips were considered official travel and paid for by US taxpayers.

A Senate Commerce Committee report accuses the FAA of lax oversight of Southwest Airlines and having an overly cozy relationship with the carrier.
The report, issued by the Republican-led Senate committee on Dec. 18, also offers withering criticism of the FAA s oversight of the helicopter tour operator industry in Hawaii, where crashes resulted in 21 deaths in 2019.
The report also took aim at Boeing and said the FAA may have obstructed a review of the two deadly crashes of the 737 Max.
The report s findings about Southwest were related to 88 Boeing 737 aircraft that the carrier acquired used from 16 different foreign airlines between 2013 and 2017.
