The opinion column written by Dr. Barbara McAneny in the Albuquerque Journal (Feb. 19) misrepresents the facts about Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center’s (CSVRMC) participation in New Mexico’s Patient Compensation Fund (PCF). As the only hospital named in her opinion, we feel the need to respond to correct the record on behalf of our providers and the patients we are privileged to serve. • CSVRMC applied for participation in the fund in 2009 because in 1976 the New Mexico Malpractice Act Section 41-5-3 was written to allow hospitals to be covered as participants in the PCF. • CSVRMC underwent underwriting, providing required data to the actuaries of the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance (OSI). House Committee OKs Health Insurance Premium Tax Hike SFNM The state House of Representatives is set to consider legislation that would create a fund to help offset the costs of health insurance premiums for lower-income people who purchase individual policies through New Mexico’s Obama-era insurance exchange. Proponents of House Bill 122 which passed the House Taxation and Revenue Committee on a 7-2 vote Wednesday say it will widen access to coverage for self-employed workers and others who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but struggle to pay premiums on their own. Opponents argue, however, the measure ultimately would shift the costs to small businesses and their employees, who would see their own health insurance rates rise to cover a higher tax on their provider.
