Pelosi: Masks stay on, despite new CDC recommendations | 14 May 2021 | Despite new guidance from the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said masks will still be required for members of Congress and staff on the House floor. On Thursday, the CDC eased recommended indoor mask guidelines for people who have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill said the speaker isn’t easing her restrictions, according to Bloomberg. The CDC s announcement, Bloomberg said, prompted some House Republicans to call on Pelosi and the Office of the Attending Physician to lift the mask rule.

WASHINGTON (AP) Jill Biden says finally going mask-free feels like “we’re moving forward.” A Republican senator says going unmasked “certainly helps the flow of conversation.”
But the conversation on the House floor on Friday approached sniping as lawmakers objected to being required to keep masking up until all 435 of them get their COVID-19 shots.

Dear Democratic Colleague,
The Capitol of the United States has always been a welcoming beacon of democracy for the American people and to the world. The past year, because of the pandemic, and the past few months, because of January 6th, have greatly curtailed the opportunity for people to experience and workers to participate in a way that is safe and secure.
This week has been a successful one, as we made great progress in honoring our responsibility to protect the U.S. Capitol Complex. Today, Appropriations Chair Rosa DeLauro introduced emergency security supplemental to respond to the January 6th insurrection. This supplemental reflects the findings of General Honoré’s report and the Inspector General s reports to the Appropriations Committee and the Committee House Administration led by Chair Zoe Lofgren. Passage of this supplemental is scheduled for next week.

Pelosi issued the mandate last year after many Republicans refused to wear masks during the coronavirus pandemic. The CDC announcement prompted some House Republicans to call on Pelosi and the Office of the Attending Physician to lift the mask rule.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday night formally invited President Joe Biden to address a joint session of Congress on April 28, his first speech to both chambers as president.
In a brief letter to Biden, Pelosi said she invited him “to share your vision for addressing the challenges and opportunities of this historic moment.”
Pelosi had previously cited the need to wait for decisions from the Office of the Attending Physician and the House Sergeant at Arms on capacity amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Former Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama both gave their first addresses in February of their first years in office.
