The Kratom plant has been removed from a list of narcotics listed under the amended Narcotics Act.
Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said the Act has been modified and the new version was published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday to annul the plant s narcotics status.
The amendment will take effect on Aug 24, Mr Somsak said.
He thanked the organisations involved in pushing for the plant s removal from the list, noting Kratom is a part of local people s lifestyle.
However, cultivation of the plant will still be restricted until a new law to regulate kratom plantations is enacted, the justice minister said.

The opposition has launched a fresh attempt to oust Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thamanat Prompow who it believes to be unqualified to hold cabinet and other political positions.
The move followed the Constitutional Court s ruling on May 5 that says Capt Thamanat, also Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) MP for Phayao, is qualified to hold his positions despite having served four years in an Australian prison in 1994.
In its ruling, the court said for a jail sentence to affect Capt Thamanat s positions as MP and cabinet member under the constitution, it must be handed down by a Thai court, not a foreign one.

The Constitutional Court s verdict on the status of Capt Thamanat Prompow did not raise any eyebrows, nor did it bring the whole nation to a shocked standstill. After all, society has become used to surprises from our judicial system that run contrary to public sentiment.
The charter court ruled that Capt Thamanat, deputy agriculture minister and an MP from the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), is qualified to be a member of parliament and cabinet minister regardless of him having served four years in an Australian prison after being convicted in 1993.
In layman s terms, Thai law permits people with a drug conviction in a foreign country to become a politician or hold public office in Thailand the Land of Smiles and Land of Second Chances at least in the case of Capt Thamanat.
