U.S. Attorney s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana issued the following announcement on Feb. 18.
United States Attorney Brandon J. Fremin announced that he has submitted his resignation as United States Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana, effective February 28, 2021. Mr. Fremin was appointed by President Donald J. Trump to the position of United States Attorney in February 2018.
U.S. Attorney Fremin stated, “Serving our nation, our state, and our community as the United States Attorney has been the highest honor of my career as a prosecutor. I will always remain grateful for being entrusted with the awesome responsibility of leading an office of the highest caliber attorneys and support staff, who have earned a great reputation for fairness, diligence, and honesty in the pursuit of justice. CANTON District Attorney Gary M. Pasqua will seek re-election to a second term as St. Lawrence County District Attorney.
Pasqua, a Republican and Conservative, was elected to his position in November of 2017 and took office the following January. He has spent the last 14 years fighting for justice for victims of crime in the North Country as an assistant district attorney, chief assistant district attorney and, finally, as district attorney.
During the past three years, Pasqua and his office were able to secure numerous convictions in cases including homicides, sexual assaults and drug crimes. Most notably, DA Pasqua lead the prosecution that convicted Christopher Hebert of the murder of Lacey Yekel. Hebert was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
