Local drug, violent crime task force honored

Feb 18, 2021 Feb 18, 2021 Vic Brown, the executive director of the Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, revealed recently that the Central Regional Drug and Violent Crime Task Force has been awarded the Appalachia HIDTA Task Force of the Year for West Virginia. The CRDVCTF was selected for the honor from among 16 HIDTA task forces from throughout West Virginia, according to a press release from Brown. The CRDVCTF is led by the West Virginia State Police, but it features a joint effort with participation from the Oak Hill Police Department, the Fayette County Sheriff s Department, the Fayetteville Police Department, the Nicholas County Sheriff s Department and the Summersville Police Department. The task force functions in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

While most attention and government resources have been focused on COVID-19, the overdose crisis has worsened as people struggle with job losses, isolation and the deaths of family and friends brought on by the pandemic. More than 83,000 people in the U.S. are thought to have died of drug overdoses in the 12-month period ending June, according to the most recent data available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a record-breaking number.

Grants support research, services in Pennsylvania, North Carolina by MaryAlice Bitts-Jackson Children exposed to substance abuse by parents and caregivers are at high risk of social, psychological, cognitive and behavioral issues. This makes a strong child-caregiver bond all the more important and all the more challenging, especially for caregivers already struggling with sobriety. Add in the stresses of a global pandemic on top of an opioid epidemic and the need for help is clear. Especially since children of caregivers suffering from substance abuse disorder are roughly twice as likely to repeat the cycle.
