President Joe Biden s drug czar pick
By Maegan Vazquez, CNN
President Joe Biden’s drug czar pick, Dr. Rahul Gupta, spent nine months last year working as an adviser to a Maryland-based cannabis company, recently released government ethics documents show.
Gupta, who was formally nominated to be the director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy earlier this month, advised Holistic Industries a multistate cannabis operator with processing facilities, dispensaries, and products like edibles and a Jerry Garcia-themed marijuana line. The disclosure says he was directly paid $10,000 for his services.
A White House spokesperson said the prospective drug czar’s work pertained to medical marijuana compliance efforts.
It seems incredible, but should Dr. Rahul Guptaâs nomination to become new director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy be confirmed, he will be the first physician to serve as our nationâs âdrug czar.â
President Joe Biden has leaned on Gupta already, as an adviser on drug control policy during his presidential transition, and appears to have found that perspective valuable. Now, he wants Gupta to make a difference on a national scale.
âDr. Gupta brings firsthand experience as a medical doctor and public health official using evidence-based strategies to address the overdose epidemic in West Virginia,â a White House statement said.
