Britain’s leading travel brand, Thomas Cook, has been slammed by Which? Holiday magazine. A survey published today says the company that pioneered organised tourism in Victorian times has “work to do to get standards up to 21st-century expectations”.
The survey of 4,500 Consumers’ Association members criticises Thomas Cook’s “poor quality hotel rooms and unhelpful resort staff”. The firm, which is Britain’s second-largest tour operator, was rated poorest out of 29 for resort reps and the quality of flights and transfers.
Thomas Cook also earned only two stars out of five for value-for-money. Six other big holiday firms were rated equally bad. They include Virgin Holidays, Princess Cruises and the mass-market sister companies, Thomson and First Choice. None earned an overall “customer score” above 70 per cent. Cosmos, Britain’s third-largest operator, took last place with 57 per cent.

If the aviation industry is truly on the eve of in-flight wi-fi connections, as we’ve been promised over the past few years, Lord help the airlines. The moment this technology becomes widely available in coach, you can expect a daily stream of disgruntled dispatches beamed down from 30,000 feet, filling blogs and online consumer forums with gripes about inedible food, puzzling delays and doubts about the whereabouts of the luggage.
In case you are wondering, yes, I am typing this column from 34,000 feet. But the Continental Airlines flight I have been shoe-horned onto has no such futuristic net connection. Instead, I have to wait to land in San Francisco in a few hours before firing off this column to my editor in London, giving Continental a few hours reprieve from a timely critique.

No limit for short-term rental accommodation: Bega Valley
Short-term rental accommodation in the Bega Valley Shire will not be capped following a Council resolution at its 30 June meeting.
The resolution means there will be no limit to how many nights people can rent their properties for short-term accommodation throughout the year, supporting the tourism industry which is critical to our shire. In making the decision, Council recognised the separate issue of a shortage of permanent rental accommodation and resolved to advocate to the NSW Government for effective measures to address this issue.
Council’s resolution was made in response to the NSW Government’s announcement of a new state-wide policy for short-term rental accommodation (STRA) to come into effect on 1 November 2021.
