Dartmouth today announced a gift of $20 million from Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe 81 and John Donahoe 82 to enhance the representation, success, and leadership of historically underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) nationally.
Their gift honors the legacy of Dartmouth alumnus E.E. Just, the African American scientific trailblazer and valedictorian of the Class of 1907, and is a key component of a $60 million investment Dartmouth is making in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across the institution.
Three weeks ago, my fellow Coptic-Egyptian friend, Weinberg freshman George Mousa, and I administered an anonymous survey to the Northwestern community via social media about Middle Eastern and North African students at the University to gather statistics before creating a petition to send to Multicultural Student Affairs. The petition urges for the creation of an MSA branch with its own content expert and graduate student expert dedicated to MENA students at the University.
The first question on the survey was “Do you know of any Middle Eastern or North African students at Northwestern?” Out of 67 respondents, 80 percent answered “Yes.”When asked, “In your opinion, are Middle Eastern and North African students a minority at Northwestern?” 81 percent of respondents answered “Yes.”

After years of scattered affinity groups and a pandemic that forced community members apart, LGBTQ+ faculty and staff at Northwestern established Out Network Evanston in 2020.
Out Network Evanston has since amassed over 100 members. The organization recently submitted paperwork to the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion seeking recognition as an official affinity group at the University. Like OUTLaw, an affinity group exclusively for Pritzker School of Law students, Out Network Evanston provides space for NU faculty and staff who identify as LGBTQ+ to build social and advocacy networks.
Matthew Abtahi, assistant director of Multicultural Student Affairs, is a founding member of the Out Network and currently sits on its leadership council. They said the council wants the organization to accommodate the diverse and varied experiences of LGBTQ+ staff at the University.
