âHe was a bright lightâ: Jackson family seeks justice in unsolved murder investigation (Source: WLBT) By Roslyn Anderson | February 9, 2021 at 6:59 PM CST - Updated February 9 at 11:17 PM
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A Jackson family is still feeling the pain of the loss of their loved one found murdered in a park more than four years ago.
The unsolved case is one of many in the city and across the country. Justin Jonesâ loved ones hope there will be a fresh look at the cold case.
âJustin was a light. He was a bright light,â said Jonesâ cousin Ebony Butler. âHe did not deserve what happened to him and he does not deserve for someone to treat his case as if it doesnât matter.â
Extending grace can be a powerful public witness for Evangelicals today. Heather Rice-Minus Image: Canva
The events of this past summer were a wake-up call for Christians, including Evangelicals. From acknowledging centuries-old, endemic racial inequality from the pulpit, calls to prayer, protest, and action, many are trying to find ways to step from the sidelines to the playing field in the pursuit of justice.
Indeed, our faith calls us to action and accountability as God’s people. The Old and New Testaments of the Bible express a preoccupation with justice. For example, biblical teaching found in Isaiah, “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression” and Hebrews, “… remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering” are just two examples of the ancient Judeo-Christian witness to a God with unwavering commitment to justice.
But the real muscle in the Biden DOJ is going to be exercised by Vanita Gupta, the nominee for associate attorney general whose large portfolio includes the Civil Rights Division, the Environmental and Natural Resources Division, the Civil Division, and the Office of Justice Programs.
As head of the Civil Rights Division under President Obama, Ms. Gupta sued police departments with a vengeance, and one can expect that to resume along with the likelihood that DOJ law enforcement grants will be conditioned on police departments accepting top-down reforms from Main Justice likely in conjunction with the same outside groups that sued the Trump DOJ at every turn, including Ms. Gupta’s now former left-wing group artfully titled “The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.”
